Appearance Self -Values and Self-Esteem of Female Adolescents in Second Level of Primary Education

Öz

Aim: This study was conducted to determine how the opinions of the female adolescents were formed concerning their bodies and to examine the effects of this on their self-esteem.
Method: The population of the study consisted of 300 female students studying in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades of a primary education school located in Yeşilyurt district of Malatya city. 200 students among them were reached. The data of the study was collected between February and March 2012 by using an Information Form, Appearance Self-value Scale, and Self-Esteem Scale. Percentage, mean, Kruskal Wallis, Correlation, Mann-Whitney U test analysis and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to assess the data.
Results: Based on the study, the Appearance Self-value scores of the female students were 26.2±4.1 and the mean score of Self-Esteem Scale was 2.3±1.8. It was found in the study that there was a statistically significant difference between the school success, family income level, family structure, and self-esteem of the female students, and also between the status of parents to be alive and Appearance Self-value (p<0.05). It was determined in the study that there was a positive correlation between the self-esteem and appearance self-value of the female students (r=.467, p<0.001).
Conclusion: It was found in the study that the appearance self-values in girls in the age group of 11 and 15 years had significant effects on their self-esteem. In addition, it is considered that improving and supporting appearance self-value and self-esteem of the adolescents lead to important acquirements in terms of promotion of female health.

İLKÖĞRETİM İKİNCİ KADEMEDEKİ KIZ ERGENLERİN GÖRÜNÜŞE GÖRE ÖZ DEĞERLERİ VE BENLİK SAYGILARI

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışma kız ergenlerin bedenleri hakkındaki görüşlerin nasıl oluştuğunu belirlemek ve bunun benlik saygılarına etkilerini incelemek amacıyla yapılmıştır.

Yöntem: Araştırmanın evrenini bir İlköğretim Okulundaki 6,7,8 sınıftaki 300 kız öğrenci oluşturmuş olup 200 öğrenciye ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri Şubat-Mart 2012 tarihleri arasında Tanıtıcı Bilgi Formu, Görünüşe İlişkin Öz-değer Ölçeği, Benlik Saygısı Ölçeği kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde yüzdelik, ortalama, Kruskal Wallis, Kolerasyon, Mann-Whitney U test analizi ve tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA) kullanılmıştır.

Bulgular: Kız öğrencilerin Görünüşe İlişkin Öz-Değerleri 26.2±4.1 ve Benlik Saygısı ölçek ortalaması 2.3±1.8’dir. Araştırmada kız öğrencilerinin okul başarısı, aile gelir düzeyi ve aile yapısı ile benlik saygısı arasında, ayrıca anne babanın yaşama durumu ile Görünüşe İlişkin Öz-Değerleri arasında istatistiksel olarak önemli bir fark olduğu saptanmıştır (p<0.05). Araştırmada kız öğrencilerin benlik saygıları ile görünüşe ilişkin öz-değerleri arasında pozitif bir ilişki (r=.467, p<0.001) olduğu saptanmıştır.

Sonuç: Araştırmada, 11-15 yaş grubu kızlarda görünüşe ilişkin öz değerlerinin benlik saygıları üzerinde önemli bir etkileri olduğu saptanmıştır. Ayrıca ergenlerin görünüşe ilişkin öz değerleri ile benlik saygılarının geliştirilmesi ve desteklenmesinin kadın sağlığının gelişimi açısından önemli kazanımlara yol açabileceği düşünülmektedir.
