Abstract

The wireless communication services have been growing exponentially for recent years. Currently deployed second generation (2G) wireless systems employ traditional antenna systems, which use omni-directional transmission/reception. With the emergence of the third generation (3G) wireless systems smart antenna systems (SAS) which are proven to provide capacity increase and coverage expansion become an attractive technology. The heart of the SAS is their advanced signal processing capability in the baseband, which enables them to adaptively adjust their beam patterns in response to channel propagation dynamics. Here, we provide an overview of different smart antenna methodologies and their applications to different multiple access techniques for mobile communications.
