Kavramsal Literatüre Katkıda Bulunmak Adına “Presenteeism” Olgusunun Türkçe Karşılığı Üzerine Bir Öneri

Year 2023, Issue: 7, 35 - 48, 31.12.2023

Abstract

A Suggestion on the Turkish Equivalent of the Phenomenon of “Presenteeism” in order to Contribute to the Conceptual Literature

Year 2023, Issue: 7, 35 - 48, 31.12.2023

Abstract

Presenteeism was expressed as 'perfect continuity' in the first years of its introduction into the literature. Over the years, presenteeism has become a central research topic due to its negative impacts on organizations, including increased costs and reduced performance. As a result of the conceptual analysis, it has been determined that there is no definition in the Turkish literature that meets the concept of 'presenteeism', which has more negative effects compared to absenteeism behavior. Additionally, it has been observed that the equivalents of the concept defined in the Turkish literature are insufficient according to the meaning classification, as they basically express the concept with just one of its three different meanings rather than all three of its accepted and used meanings in scientific studies.
The literature on the subject of "Persenteeism" in the national and international literature, including PhD and master's theses, was searched. Drawing on TDK dictionaries, we propose 'Unhealthy Attendance' as a more comprehensive Turkish equivalent for “Presenteeism”, considering that it will provide integrity of meaning in both daily life and scientific studies and will be easier and more understandable to use. As a result of this study, it is predicted that the proposed expression "Unhealthy Attendance" will maintain the integrity of meaning by meeting the three meanings emphasized in scientific studies at the same time and will contribute positively to the national literature by providing continuity.
