Abstract

Abstract

Mothers are an important source of information for their daughters. Quality mother-daughter communication has been associated with positive sexual health outcomes. Therefore, the aim of the study was to examine the content of communication between mothers and their daughters about sexual development and health. The research is a qualitative research and there are 20 mothers in the study group. Interview technique was used in the research and findings were obtained with semi-structured interview questions. According to the results of the research, it was seen that almost all mothers talked to their daughters about their sexual development. Menstruation period, pad usage, genital area cleaning and personal hygiene were the most frequently discussed topics. Protection from sexual abuse was also frequently mentioned. It has also been determined that mothers are uncomfortable and avoid talking about sexual development because they do not know what to say or how to explain it, and because they are embarrassed. It has been observed that the internet is mostly preferred as a source of information.
