Abstract

Abstract

Purpose: It is extremely important for adolescents with type 1 diabetes to adapt to their disease, as well as to have proper nutrition and planned and regular physical activity. The aim of the study is to evaluate nutrition and exercise behaviors in adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
Method: The sample of the descriptive study was 101 adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The data of the study were collected by face-to-face interview method using the “Personal Information Form and Nutrition Exercise Behavior Scale”. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate the data and t test analyzes were used to compare the independent variable. Significance was evaluated at p<0.05 level.
Results: The average age of the adolescents was 12.46±2.70 (years), the average Body Mass Index (kg/m²) was 29.41±7.71 and 38.6% were determined to be obese. It was determined that 44.6% of adolescents skipped meals, 62.4% consumed junk food, and 31.7% did not do planned and regular physical activity. The total mean score of the Adolescents' Nutrition-Exercise Behavior Scale was calculated to be 165.97±17.27. It was determined that the Healthy Nutrition-Exercise Behavior subscale total score average of children who did planned and regular physical activity was higher than those who did not do planned and regular physical activity (p=0.02).
Result: It was determined that nearly half of the adolescents with type 1 diabetes were obese or above and their physical activity status was insufficient.
