Water and Waste Management in Eco-Cities in the Context of Sustainable Urban Development

Year 2024, Volume: 14 Issue: 1, 92 - 100, 29.04.2024

Abstract

Eco-cities are environmentally friendly and human-centered urban areas designed based on principles of sustainability. Concerning water management, various measures such as rainwater harvesting systems, wastewater recycling, and the use of technologies promoting water conservation are aimed at more effective utilization of water resources in eco-cities. Additionally, emphasis is placed on enhancing the quality of discharged wastewater through wastewater treatment systems and prioritizing the recovery of valuable materials from wastewater. For instance, eco-cities like Hammarby Sjöstad (Sweden) ensure more efficient use of water resources through measures like rainwater harvesting systems, wastewater recycling, and water-saving technologies.

In the domain of waste management in eco-cities, besides practices like waste separation and recycling, diverse strategies are adopted to reduce the quantity of waste. Campaigns for waste reduction, utilization of recyclable materials, and composting of organic waste are pursued in eco-cities such as Vauban (Germany) to address waste issues. Concrete examples from these cities demonstrate the success of water and waste management strategies.

This study highlights that the foundation of sustainable urban development lies in water and waste management practices evident in concrete examples from eco-cities. Eco-cities hold substantial potential as urban spaces not only addressing current environmental challenges but also aspiring to leave a more habitable world for future generations.

Sürdürülebilir kentsel gelişim bağlamında eko şehirlerde su ve atık yönetimi

Year 2024, Volume: 14 Issue: 1, 92 - 100, 29.04.2024
