Socio-political Analysis of ‘Identity’, ‘Culture’ and ‘Civilization’ as the Parameters Representing the Social Perception of our Age

Öz

Recent political arena suffers under hesitation and contradictory trends between globalisation and multiculturalism and between localisation and ethnic identities, and seeks monoculturalism in respect of countries and people with similar culture coming together in cultural, social, economic co-operations and strategic alliances with those of different cultures and various civilizations that tend to be left outside of these co-operations because of their ‘differences’. In this context, identity question is at the agenda for the people who have a fear to lose their own identities. Identity is a social phenomenon which starts with the identity formation process by means of interaction with the ‘other’ or against the ‘other’. The individual tends to internalise and practice the behaviours, values and norms of the society where he or she has lived in, in order to provide his or her psychological and physical security. In this way, to get an identity one must either identify oneself with someone and/or be perceived as identical to someone else. The continuous and permanent internalisation processes of social setting are resulted in the construction of an individual identity within a social dimension. The universalization of national culture constitutes the ‘civilization’ and the way of living and perception creates the ‘culture under the notions of constructivist theory. In this study, the concepts culture, identity and civilization will be analyzed with the cross-cultural level and the possible confusion will be removed in this descriptive way.

ÇAĞIMIZIN TOPLUMSAL ALGISINI TEMSİL EDEN PARAMETRELERDEN ‘KİMLİK’, ‘KÜLTÜR’ VE ‘UYGARLIK’ KAVRAMLARININ SOSYO-POLİTİK ANALİZİ

Öz

Günümüz politik arenası birbirine zıt iki sürecin paralel olarak gelişmesinin şaşkınlık ve tereddüdünü yaşamaktadır: bir yandan ulus-üstü kimliklerin inşasını kaçınılmaz kılan bölgesel blokların oluşması, bu oluşumların ideolojisi olarak küreselleşme ve bu ideolojiye meşruiyet kazandıran çok kültürlülük söylemi, öte yandan yerelleşme, geleneğin ve etnik kimliklerin yeniden inşası süreçleri... Bu bağlamda, kişiler her iki sürecin sonunda kimliklerini kaybetme ve kültürel kimlik referanslarından uzaklaşma tehdidi ve farklılıklarla yüzleşme zorunluluğuyla buldular kendilerini. Kimlik, “öteki” ile ve “öteki”ye karşı etkileşim yoluyla şekillenen sosyal bir olgu ve dinamik bir süreçtir. Kimlik edinme sürecinde birey, psikolojik ve fiziksel güvenliğini sağlamak ve toplum tarafından kabul edilmek amacıyla, yaşadığı toplumun davranış modellerini, değer ve normlarını içselleştirmek ve pratiğe yansıtmak durumundadır. Bu yolla, kimlik edinmek için ya başkasına göre kendini tanımlaması ya da başkası tarafından algılandığı parametrelerle kendini özdeşleştirmesi gerekir. İnşa teorisi olarak da adlandırılan sosyal kurgunun sürekli ve daimi içselleştirilme süreçleri, sosyal boyutta birey kimliğinin inşasıyla sonuçlanır. Kimliğin evrensel parametreler bağlamında genişletilmesi uygarlığı, uygarlığın üzerine inşa edildiği ve insanoğlunun hayatı algılayış ve yaşayış tarzına dair yapıp ettiği her şeyi temsil eden nosyon ise kültürü ifade etmektedir. Bu çalışmada kimlik, kültür ve uygarlık kavramları karşılaştırmalı bir analize tabi tutulacak ve böylelikle bu terminolojide yaşanması muhtemel olan kavram kargaşası ortadan kaldırılacaktır.
