The purpose of this study
is to discuss the thoughts of Octavio Paz, a Mexican poet, about translation in
the light of his article titled “Translation:
Literature and Letters.”
Seeing the act of translation as a
trans-linguistic act of creation; Paz expressed his thoughts about the concept
of translation in his texts through certain concepts (such as equivalence, endenization,
alienation), which have frequently been subject to translation debates from past
to present. In the first stage of the study, the life of Octavio Paz is briefly
discussed; in the second part, his thoughts about literature are evaluated; and
in the third part, his viewpoint on literary translation is centered upon in
the light of his article titled “Translation: Literature and Letters.” As a result
of the study, it was concluded that the thoughts of the poet about literature
had greatly been influenced by his life experiences and there were parallelisms
between his thoughts about literature and his thoughts about literary
translation.
