Ortaöğretim Öğrencilerinin İngilizce Öğrenimlerini Etkileyen abancı Dil Kaygısı

Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı ortaöğretim öğrencilerinin yabancı dil öğrenmelerini etkileyen etmenlerden yabancı dil kaygısının İngilizce öğrenimine etkisini belirlemektir. Bu çalışmanın evrenini Gaziantep’te 2004-2005 öğretim yılında yabancı dil ağırlıklı eğitim veren liselerin hazırlık sınıflarında öğrenim gören öğrenciler oluşturmuştur.Rasgele yöntemle seçilen 293 öğrenciye Likert tipi yabancı dil kaygı ölçeği uygulanmıştır. Verilerin analizi için t-testi, tek yönlü ANOVA ve Scheffé testleri kullanılmıştır. Öğrencilerin, anne ve babalarının eğitim düzeylerinin, mesleklerinin, cinsiyetlerinin, mezun oldukları ve okudukları okul türünün yabancı dil kaygı düzeylerine etkisi araştırılmış ve öğrencilerin kaygı düzeylerinin bunlardan etkilenmediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ancak kaygı düzeyi yüksek öğrencisi olan okulların bir kısmında başarı düzeyleri düşük bulunmuştur. Ortaöğretim öğrencilerinin yabancı dil kaygı düzeylerinin başarılarını etkilediği, yabancı dil kaygısı yüksek öğrencilerin akademik yıl sonu yabancı dil notlarının düşük olduğu, düşük yabancı dil kaygısı taşıyan öğrencilerin ise notlarının yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir

Foreign Language Anxiety Affecting Learning English of Secondary School Students in Gaziantep

Öz

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the foreign language anxiety on English learning within the factors affecting foreign language learning. This study was conducted to the preparatory class students at foreign language oriented high schools in central Gaziantep in academic year of 2004-2005. Likert type anxiety scale was applied to 293 randomly selected students. The data were analyzed by using t test, one way ANOVA and Scheffé tests. The effects of the level of education and the occupation of the parents, the genres of the students, the school type they study, the primary schools they graduated from on the level of foreign language anxiety was investigated and no effects of these parameters were found. On the other hand, some of the schools where the students had high level of foreign language anxiety had low academic successes. As a result of this study, it is determined that foreign language anxiety levels affect secondary school student’s English learning academic successes, the students with high level of foreign language anxiety received low grades in English language courses at the end of the academic year; however, the students with the low level of foreign language anxiety
