An Emerging Challenge to the Paradigm of Unlimited Growth: Degrowth

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 13 Sayı: 1, 122 - 139, 08.03.2024

Öz

The ecological crisis arising from climate change has highlighted the limitations of the growth-oriented paradigm, intensifying debates on the sustainability of the current model. In this context, especially in the last two decades, the concept of degrowth has gained significance in academic circles. Emerging as a critique against perspectives that solely evaluate economic growth as the sole indicator of societal progress, degrowth has garnered increasing attention amid growing concerns about environmental sustainability, social inequality, and unforeseen consequences of expansion. This study aims to elucidate the history, theoretical foundations, basic principles, and criticisms directed at degrowth, shedding light on its place within academic discourse.
