A MONOGRAPH ON SPACE: KAHN ARCHITECTURE AND TURRELL INSTALLATION

Öz

The way design disciplines and art look at space in terms of their reasonings and their perceptions shows similarities and differences between past and present. This is also true for architecture, that creates space, and installation art, that presents spatial narratives. In the readings, no study was found in which the concept of space was monographically handled in the context of its relationship with architecture and installation art and examined in depth with case analysis. From this point of view, the hypothesis that the multidimensionality of space can be read through the architecture of Louis Kahn and the installation of James Turrell was put forward and a monographic examination was carried out.
The study consists of determining the sample, research and analysis. The selection of the names in question was influenced by the fact that their ways of dealing with space can be read both through their own discourses and publications on their works, as well as the fact that they are award winners. Theses, scientific research papers, artistic criticism texts, book/book chapters, interviews and biography documentaries were used as research material. In the examinations made by content analysis, firstly, the concepts expressing the architect and artist's view of space were determined. Then, common and different concepts in both fields were ranked according to their frequency of use. Thus, representing Louis Kahn and James Turrell's approaches to space with the concepts frequently encountered in the literature and illustrating them has been adopted as the method of the study.

MEKÂN OLGUSU ÜZERİNE BİR MONOGRAFİ: KAHN MİMARLIĞI VE TURRELL ENSTALASYONU

Öz

Tasarım ve sanat disiplinleri arasında ortak olan mekân kavramı; varoluş nedenleri ve algılanma biçimleri yönünden geçmişten günümüze benzerlikler ve farklılıklar göstermektedir. Mekânı yaratan mimarlık ile mekânsal anlatılar ortaya koyan enstalasyon sanatı için de bu durum geçerlidir. Yapılan okumalarda mekan kavramının, mimarlık ve enstalasyon sanatı ilişkisi bağlamında vaka analiziyle derinlemesine irdelendiği bir çalışmaya rastlanmamıştır. Bu noktada mekân kavramının her iki disiplinde eş zamanlı olarak birleştirici ve fark yaratıcı özelliklerinin görünür kılınmasının, bu olgunun derinliği konusunda yapılan çalışmalara katkı vereceği düşünülmektedir. Bu bakış açısı ile mekânın çok boyutlu olma durumunun, bir vaka olarak Louis Kahn mimarlığı ve James Turrell enstalasyonu üzerinden okunabileceği hipotezi öne sürülmüş ve monografik bir inceleme gerçekleştirilmiştir.
Bu kapsamda; literatürde yer edinmeleri ve alanlarında ödül almış olmaları gerekçesiyle seçilen isimlerin, haklarında yayınlamış kaynaklar üzerinden içerik analizi yapılarak tasarım anlayışları ve mekânı ele alış biçimleri çeşitli kavramlarla temsil edilmiş, irdelenmiş ve tartışılmıştır.
Bu çerçevede, Louis Kahn ve James Turrell’in mekana bakışının; özellikle ışık, geometri ve malzemenin yoğun kullanımı açısından ilişkili olduğu görülmüştür. Ayrıca etkileşim, zaman, tinsellik ve doluluk-boşluk kavramları da her iki disiplindeki mekân anlayışında ortak olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Burada etkileşim ve tinsellik daha çok James Turrell’in, zaman ve doluluk-boşluk ise Louis Kahn’ın mekânı anlamlandırmasında ön plana çıkmaktadır.
Bu noktada, tespit edilen farklılıklar ele aldığında ise, Kahn’ın yapılarında kalıcılık ilkesi hâkimken, Turrell’in eserlerinde izleyici üzerinde oluşturulan algıya odaklanılması dikkat çekmektedir. Sonuç olarak her iki disiplin temsilcisinin de kendilerine özgü bakış açıları ile mekan olgusunun farklı katmanlarına karşı bazen benzer, bazen ise farklı hassasiyetler gösterdiği anlaşılmıştır.
