D. M. Thomas’ın 1981 tarihli
Beyaz Otel adlı romanındaki ana meselelerden birisi kişisel ve kolektif travma
arasında bağ kurmaktır. Ancak, romanın anlatı yapısının da gösterdiği üzere, bu
bağ, çizgisel, neden-sonuç ilişkisine dayalı anlatılar yoluyla anlaşılamaz ve
temsil edilemez. Roman, edebiyatın, insanın acısına ve travmatik hafızaya
ulaşmanın bir yolu olduğunu, bunun da anlatı yoluyla diğer insanlara aktarılabileceğini
önermektedir. Bu anlamda, roman, hafızanın, anlamın kurgulandığı, yeniden
kurgulandığı, ve hatırlandığı tarihsel ve politik bir alan olduğu fikrinin
altını çizer. Bu makalede, Beyaz Otel’deki travmatik hafızanın temsilinin,
romanın çok katmanlı anlatı yapısıyla olan ilişkisi incelenmektedir. Bu çerçevede,
makale, Thomas’ın Beyaz Otel’de Freudyen psikanaliz yaklaşımının travmatik hafızaya
yaklaşımını nasıl eleştirdiğini ve bu yaklaşımın yerine, travmanın hem kişisel
hem de tarihsel bağlamını göz önüne alan edebiyatın travmatik hafızayı
kurgulayışını göstermektedir.
