This article focuses on Gagauz in the Republic of Moldova and Gagauz in Ukraine, Bulgaria. There are many theories about the origin of the Gagauz. Among the various theories put forward by historians, especially the view that they are of Greek or Bulgarian origin, one of which is of Turkish origin and the other is not of Turkish origin, has been examined. Religion appears to be a determining factor in defining ethnicity. It has been stated that this factor is an important factor determining the ethnic origin of the Gagauz people.
