This paper was compiled from the findings of the published papers on DME in diesel engines. The special procedures are employed for reduction of pollutant emissions of diesel engines. The first procedure is improvement of combustion via engine design and fuel injection modification but this is expensive and protracted. The second procedure is used an exhaust gas devices i.e. catalytic converter and particulate filter. However, these devices have adverse impact on engine performance. The last procedure is practiced the various alternative fuels and additives to reduce the emissions and also improve engine performance. The last one seems effective and economical. DME is superior for diesel engines thanks to smart fuel properties i.e. high cetane number and oxygen content. Conversely, combustion, performance and emissions in an internal combustion engine (ICE) are depended notably cyclic variations. Thus, it is vital that results of studies on DME are evaluated jointly to practice applications. Hence, this study aims to investigate the effects of DME on cyclic variations depending on current literature.
