Using semi-structured interviews with 20 retirees in Istanbul who are members of the Turkish Pensioners’ Association (TÜED), the research reveals that retirement is a collective process shaped by family dynamics and interactions rather than a purely individual decision. Findings indicate that factors such as the presence of dependent family members, work-family conflict, a partner’s health status, the quality of family communication, spousal support, and parenthood directly influence the timing of retirement. While supporting certain existing literature findings (e.g., the increased f inancial burden of dependents), this study also contradicts others (e.g., the negligible effect of income on retirement decisions), highlighting the crucial role of the traditional Turkish family structure in the retirement process. In conclusion, retirement is a complex phenomenon significantly influenced not only by economic and demographic variables but also by an individual’s interactions with their immediate social environment.
