The design of structures is generally carried out based on existing ground conditions. However, temperature changes occurring in clay soils with high water retention capacity may adversely affect structural performance. In this study, the effects of elevated temperature on the geotechnical properties of Bartın clay were experimentally investigated. Clay samples obtained from the Bartın region were subjected to temperatures ranging from 20 to 700 °C, and sieve and hydrometer analyses, consistency limit tests, pycnometer tests, and unconfined compression tests were conducted at each temperature level. Microstructural changes were examined using TG–DTG, XRD, and SEM analyses, and temperature-induced variations in geotechnical properties were correlated with these transformations. The results indicate that increasing temperature leads to significant changes in the geotechnical and mineralogical characteristics of the soil, highlighting the importance of considering temperature effects in geotechnical engineering applications.
