The argument unfolds in two critical and one constructive moment. First, the article examines the cultural of emotivism that is characterized by interminable arguments on morality, and the manipulative function of moral language. This outlook is contextualized within the failure of modern moral theory to provide rational justification for objective morality. Second, the discussion focuses on the strains exerted on practices by the institutions they are embedded in, as well as by the surrounding institutions of modern society. In these settings dominated by instrumental rationality, the goods internal to practices can be sidelined or marginalized Third, the focus is shifted to the constructive moment. On this level, the concepts of internal goods, virtue, and narrative unity function in unison to identify contexts in which agents recognize goods and order their commitments in historically extended traditions of argument.
