It is common in women and reduces the quality of life. Economic burden of dysmenorrhea on the health system is quite high. Depending on the severity of symptoms, it may restrict work performance and school and other daily activities. Primary dysmenorrhea refers to the presence of recurrent, crampy, lower abdominal pain occurring during menses in the absence of any demonstrable pathology. Secondary dysmenorrhea refers to painful menstruation in the presence of a pelvic pathology. Primary dysmenorrhea is a common problem experienced by women in their reproductive years. Secondary dysmenorrhea is more common among the women in the fourth and fifth decades of life. For correct diagnosis, a detailed evaluation of the symptoms and a comprehensive physical examination is very important. Treatment options vary from conservative approaches to medical treatments.In this review, we intended to provide contemporary information on the definition and evaluation of primary dysmenorrhea, and treatment options.
