N2  - Relations between humans and the natural environment compose the basis for geographical research. In geography, which is the science of space, learning through maps is the most effective language or communication tool to transfer data about a space. Within this frame other matters such as how and where to start teaching, what kind of applications to do, why producing sketch maps or plans is important for mapping a geographical feature or a data and how mental maps are formed will also be considered. Learning through maps does not just cover for all the areas and subject in geography education. Together with the appropriate materials learning through maps can be applied at all stages and levels of education and at any age and class levels. This is because mapping includes coding data from life on to a flat platform then for the map user to understand that code and to read and interpret the data. It is possible to consider learning through maps as transforming or conveying a piece of information from life with an appropriate language. Thus in order for teaching and learning through this method to be effective, the most important thing is for the map maker and the map user to use and know a common language. In other words users and the map makers need to know the features, aims, kinds and limitations of maps. In order for this kind of knowledge to be gained the students need to have the opportunity of using, examining, comparing and understanding the maps purpose for production by seeing all kinds of different maps from all kind of levels, from the simplest to the hardest level. We can start to expose students to using maps, making and interpreting maps, with the local area and their daily lives. Sketch maps or plans that are either made in the classroom or at a field work of the local environment ad the transformation of data through these maps are the most important elements in learning through maps. Thus within this learning procedure students will learn the relationship between the real space and the maps, will learn the features, usage, aims, limitations of maps as well as the importance of exaggeration and projection in maps, what mental maps are and how to improve sketch maps.
