However as a result of some developments provincial forces lost their power in the imperial army hereafter mercenaries were distinguished. In the second half of the 11th century, mercenaries became principal unit in the army. According to the contemporary Byzantine, Armenian, Latin and Islam sources during this period there were a great number of mercenaries from various nations such as Frankish, Norman, Venetian, Russian, Bulgarian, Alan, Serbian, Georgian, Armenian, Pecheneg, Cuman, Uz, Turcopole and Selchukid in Byzantine army.
