Ma te ri al and Met - hods: Applying simple random sampling, in intensive care unit of a hospital of education and research specialized in cardiac diseases and located in İstanbul, 67 patients submitted to mechanical ventilation were selected. Beforehand to conduct the study, a letter of authority was taken from the institution. To collect data, “Behavioral Pain Scale (BPS)” and a survey sheet involving questions related to the disease, treatment and demographic information were used. The data were interpreted making use of SPSS. Percentage, frequency range, t test and Mann-Whitney-U tests were also applied as statistical methods. Re sults: 37.3% of the patients were between 61-70 years of age and 50.7% of those patients were male and 49.3% were female. Among those patients, the average score of whom were 4.04±1.77 according to BPS, 26.9% were taking analgesics to relieve pain whereas 73.1% were not taking any analgesic. To relieve pain, 97% of the patients were being provided non-pharmacological methods by nurses. A significant difference was observed between the BPS scores of the patients who use analgesic and who do not. The BPS scores of the patients who use analgesic were higher (p < 0.05). Conc lu si on: In order to control pain, all the patients were being provided at least one non-pharmacological method. In case of patients submitted to mechanical ventilation, pain status should not be disregarded, instead it should regularly be assessed by intensive care unit nurses.
