N2 - Slow movement started with slow food,is prevalent in several areas from cities to media, from fashion to tourismtoday. Slow cities, after they receive the “Cittaslow” appellation lunged aheadin tourism. Recognition of these cities increased with the Cittaslow “brand,”which in turn made these cities a center of attraction for tourists. However,with popularity came increasing number of tourists and these cities cease to be“slow.” Mostly excursion tourists are visiting these cities. Tourists thatvisit Cittaslow usually have a mind set on consumption similar to conventionaltourists. The objective of the present study is to discuss preservation ofenvironmental and cultural values, how these factors could attract tourists andhow the factor of slowness could be distanced from the mass tourism and couldmove closer to the concept of sustainable tourism with suggestions. Thus, 9slow cities were visited and interviews were conducted with people in thesecities. The method of the study is attended observation and in-depth interview.The study was conducted within the framework of TÜBİTAK project No 113K624. Theauthor has experienced 9 slow cities in Turkey using attended observationmethod and conducted research.
