He hugely admired President AbrahamLincoln, and in spite of never having met Lincoln personally, he was stronglyaffected by the President’s assassination. He wrote the poem O Captain! My Captain! as an elegy toexpress his deep sorrow on theunfortunate event and commemorate the President. Whitman normally wrote in freeverse; similarly, in this poem a fixed meter is not used. However, probablybecause this poem was an elegy, he used a particular pattern of a four-longline stanza followed by a four-short line stanza as an exception and this makesit special and different from his other poems. This poem in English, itsTurkish translations Ey Kaptan! CanımKaptanım! by Memet Fuat, Oy Reis!Koca Reis! by Can Yücel, and itsFrench translation Ô Capitaine! MonCapitaine! by Léon Bazalgette constitute the corpus of this study. Thefour poems were read together in a 10thgrade Literature class and their scopes of meaning as well as their form wascomparatively analyzed. In this study,the possible contributions of reading and analyzing a poem with itstranslations to students’ class participation, the efficiency of the Literatureclass itself, and the development of intercultural awareness are discussed. Inaddition, by utilizing French semiotician Jean-Claude Coquet’s “Theory ofInstances of Enunciation” as a basis, the reflections of the role of thetranslator upon the target text as the receiver and producer of discourse isevaluated.
