According to the data obtained by Food and AgricultureOrganization (FAO) in 2016, 37.9 million people in the world have been workingas fishermen. According to the same data, there are 4,6 million fishing vesselsin the world. Estimated number of fatalities is more than 24.000 in this sectorand about 24 million fishermen are wounded each year. Although safety at seaand fishermen awareness are not well studied in our country, it is observedthat more attention is shown to this issue in the international area.Determination of safety at seaadequacies of commercial trawlers in Mersin regarding relevant regulations, andstating the precautions that should be taken into account in order to supplythe safety of workers in fishing vessels, the awareness of fishermen aboutsafety and the essential training requirements are the main aims of thisstudy. The data has been obtained by face to face interviews with 102 trawlfishermen in Mersin Erdemli, Centre of Mersin, and Mersin Karaduvar fishing ports between September 2014 andJanuary 2015. According to the survey result, 43% of the respondents consideredthat fishing is dangerous at the highest level (10 on a 10 pointscale) while 3%of respondents consider that fishing is dangerous at the minimum level (1 on a10 pointscale). Of these 102 fishermen, 75% got involved in accidents on boardwhile 25% did not experience in any accident. In order to minimize the accidentrate at trawl fishing in this area, it is needed to organize the training onsafety at sea and fishing operations and to fulfill the requirements of theregulations for captains and crews working on fishing vessels.
