By considering main developmentsin Turkey’s democratic transition, the aim is to trace the influences ofTurkish foreign policy choices on strengthening democracy in Turkey. In thiscontext, this study argues that westernization had been a modernization projectof Turkey with the strategic and economic concerns until the end of the ColdWar. In the post-Cold War period, the political Europeanization project ofTurkey has made significant contributions to the process of democratizationsince the Helsinki Summit of 1999. However, with the problematic relationshipof Turkey-EU after the golden years (1999-2005) of rapprochement, Turkey wentto a redefinition process of its orientation in modernization, democratizationand foreign policy under the Justice and Development Party rule in the lastdecade. Bu amaçla, Türkiye’nin demokrasiyegeçişindeki temel gelişmeleri hesaba katarak hangi dış politika tercihlerininTürkiye’de demokrasinin güçlenmesine etki ettiğinin izini sürmektedir. Bubağlamda, batılılaşmanın stratejik ve ekonomik kaygılarla Soğuk Savaş dönemininsonuna kadar süren Türkiye’nin modernleşme projesi olduğunu iddia etmektedir.Soğuk Savaş sonrası dönemde, 1999 Helsinki Zirvesi’nden beri de Türkiye’ninsiyasal Avrupalılaşma projesi demokratikleşme sürecine önemli katkılardabulunmuştur. Buna rağmen, yakınlaşmanın ‘altın yıllarından’ (1999-2005) sonrakisorunlu Türkiye-AB ilişkileriyle Türkiye, son on yıldır Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisiyönetimi altında modernleşme, demokratikleşme ve dış politika eksenini yenidentanımlandığı bir döneme girmiştir.
