DMs in our country are usually dumped at seaby barges and pose a serious risk to the aquatic environment. In this study, the characterization of the DMs excavated by dredging operations and thecharacterization of their washing wastewaters are determined and the design ofa washing-sieving plant for the beneficial use of DM as a fine aggregate inconcrete applications is carried out. Furthermore the cost analysis of thewashing-sieving plant planned to be established for pilot regions is peformed. The findings of this study indicate that DM can be used as a fine aggregate inconcrete applications in case of subjecting to the washing-sievingpre-treatment process, generated washing-sieving wastewater does not involveany contaminant causing a risk to the sewage/sea discharge. The firstinvestment and operating costs of possible DM washing-sieving plant’s having acapacity of 1,500 m3/day are predicted to be 6,753,600 TL and2,366,810 TL, respectively, and the unit cost is presumed as 6.3 TL/ton.
