Buyöntemler hayvanların bir daha gebe kalmasını engelleyebildiği gibi, mevcut gebeliğin sonlandırılmasını takiben tekrar gebekalmasına da olanak sağlar. Hayvanların kalıcı olarak doğurganlığını kaybetmesini istemeyen hayvan sahipleri için, istenmeyengebeliği sonlandırmak amacıyla çeşitli farmakolojik ajanlar tercih edilir. Bu kimyasal maddeler gebeliğin farklı dönemlerinde farklıyöntemlerle uygulanmaktadır. Son yıllarda en çok kullanılan farmakolojik maddeler; Prostaglandinler, Ergot Alkaloidleri,Mifepristone, Aglepristone, GnRH Agonistleri ve GnRH Antagonistleri’dir. Bu ilaçlar tek başlarına kullanılabildiği gibi, birliktekullanıldıklarında daha başarılıdırlar. Köpeklerde gebeliğin ilk ve ikinci yarısında endokrinoloji farklıdır.
