N2  - A simple and useful formula is derived for the approximate design of rectangular reinforced concrete columns. A possible error in the order of (±15%) was considered acceptable when developing the formula. The percentages of reinforcement or cross-sectional dimensions can be directly calculated from this formula, if the material properties, loads and the dimensionless eccentricity factors are known. The results obtained from the formula, which is applicable when the dimensionless axial load level is higher than 0.50, were compared to the exact solutions of numerous columns. It is observed that the error ratio is mostly between -15% and +15% and the results are fairly close to the actual results.
