TY - JOUR TT - The Analysis of the Sentence Structures Containing Universal- or Particular Quantifiers in German, Turkish and English in the Light of Victor Yngve’s Depth Hypothesis AU - İmrağ, Özge Sinem PY - 2017 DA - December JF - Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi JO - CUJOSS PB - Sivas Cumhuriyet University WT - DergiPark SN - 1305-5143 SP - 177 EP - 188 VL - 41 IS - 2 KW - Memory KW - Depth Hypothesis KW - Victor Yngve KW - Universal/ Particular Quantifier N2 - The memory, which can be defined as the process to conserve and -whennecessary- recall the obtained information and abilities, is divided in twoparts as temporary and permanent memory. Permanent memory is where a lot ofinformation like grammatical rules is stored. Temporary memory is the kind ofmemory which has a limited capacity to conserve information in comparison withthe permanent memory.Sentence making occurs by processing the information stored in temporarymemory for later use in the permanent memory. Memory is not affected by thenumber of the words which are composing the sentence, but by the articulationof these words. In the articulated word strings the meaning emerges from eitherleft-to-right or right-to-left articulation. According to the depth hypothesisby Victor Yngve, who claims that left recursive sentence structures increasethe amount of space taken up in the temporary memory, left recursive structuresadd to the depth of a sentence. The more the depth of a sentence increases, themore the psychological complexity of the sentence increases. In German and English, which are conjugative languages, both leftrecursive and right recursive sentence structures are to be found. But inTurkish, which is an agglutinative language, there are usually left recursivestructures. For example noun phrases containing a universal quantifier like“all” or a particular quantifier like “some” begin in Turkish not with thesequantifiers, but with other elements. Therefore all elements used until thebasic element must be stored in memory. So in German and English it is not necessaryto wait the end of a sentence so as to understand its meaning, but in Turkish themeaning becomes clear just in the very end of sentence. In this study thesentence structures containing universal- or particular quantifiers will beanalysed in the light of the depth hypothesis. CR - GREENE, J. (1972).
