N2  - The local press that concentrates on solving various problems of individuals in local areas, is continuing its existence in order to enhance the relationship between the members of society, and contribute to the formation of the public opinion at local level. With doing this, it inherently monitors and controls the local governance. It is deemed a noble task because it also criticizes the local governance. The local press has adapted to technological advances and this enabled the local press to enrich its content and it has survived being disappeared. Thanks to online journalism, local press have been able to reach millions of people at national level. Besides, the local press have started to use new printing technologies and this have resulted in that local newspapers have increased their circulation and they have been able to increase their number of pages that were limited before shifting to new printing technologies. In this study, the state of the local press in 1999 and 2013 are examined and the main purpose of the study is pointing out the historical evolution of the local press and which roles the local press plays today. This study was carried out by methods such as literature review, archival scanning, and text analysis, and finally “Ataköy Gazetesi” (newspaper) and “Kent Yaşam” (newspaper) which were published between March 1999 and March 2013 were examined in order to elaborate the subject
