TY - JOUR TT - A Systematic Review of Professional Development Programs for Language Teachers over ten years: Regional Perspectives AU - Çınarbaş, Halil İbrahim AU - Hoş, Rabia PY - 2018 DA - May JF - Turkish Online Journal of English Language Teaching JO - TOJELT PB - Ahmet Selçuk AKDEMİR WT - DergiPark SN - 2458-9918 SP - 42 EP - 63 VL - 3 IS - 2 KW - professional development (PD) KW - teacher learning KW - English language teaching KW - systematic review KW - MAXQDA N2 - The concepts of what it means to be a learnerand a language teacher have radically changed with the developments that causedEnglish language to become a lingua franca around the world. In response tosuch radical changes, language teachers are urged to constantly reconstructtheir knowledge, improve their practices, attitudes and beliefs accordingly.Professional Development (PD) programs are a way of improving language teachers’ practices. In this systematic review, thequalitative studies about PD programs in the field of foreign language teachingwere reviewed according to predetermined criteria. Selected studies wereanalyzed using MAXQDA software. The analysis of selected articles shows thatthere are regional patterns in terms of the purpose of PD. While Region 1 focused on framing PDactivities around educational policies, the studies in Region 2 focused onintegration of technology and collaboration in PD activities. In addition, the studies were diverse in their methodological and theoretical frameworks. Itis concluded that there is a need to explore the experiences of languageteachers after they attend PD programs. CR - Alimirzaee, H., & Ashraf, H. (2016).
