The nasal application of lipophilic drugs with low molecular weight yield absorption profiles close to i.v. administration. But high molecular weight and hydrophilic drugs have difficulty transferring through the nasal mucosa. Many strategies have been developed in order to improve this transport. Among them the most studied are bioadhesive polymer drug carrier systems. These systems increase absorption of drugs by prolonging the drug residence time in mucosa and by opening up tight junctions between the epithelial cells. In this review, the advantages and limitations of the nasal passsage, nasal anatomy, transport routes across nasal mucosa, improvement of drug permeation, systems prolonging the drug residence time in mucosa, and drugs/vaccines applied nasally and targeting to brain are briefly presented UR - https://doi.org/10.1501/Eczfak_0000000541 L1 - https://dergipark.org.tr/en/download/article-file/424415 ER -
