AB  - Hafızanın en temel iki ögesi hatırlamak ve unutmaktır. Bireysel ve kolektif hafıza, bu iki eylem arasında bir yerlerde olgunlaşır ve gelişir. Ancak, özellikle kolektif hafızanın oluşumunda siyasi iktidarlar devreye girerek, kolektif kimliğe anlamını verecek hatırlama ve unutma yollarını kontrol ederler. Bu manipülasyon yolları iki yönde gelişir; bir yandan, siyasi otorite, hatırlama yollarını kurarken ritüeller, anma törenleri, hafıza mekânları gibi pozitif yöntemler kullanır, öte yandan, resmî tarih oluşturarak, cezai düzeneklerle baskıcı bir politika uygular. Bu çarpıtılmış hatırlamanın yanı sıra, modernleşme sürecinin kolaylaştırdığı bir unutma yol haritası gerçekleştirilir; eski sosyal ve kültürel çevrenin sürekli yıkımı, kitle tüketim alışkanlıkları, modern hayatın değişkenliği ve hızı, kolektif unutmayı kolaylaştırır ve hızlandırır. Özellikle, kentlerin otoyollardan, uydu semtlerden, yüksek binalardan ve heybetli alışveriş merkezlerinden oluşan yeni kurgusu toplumsal hafızanın tümüyle yıkımını hazırlar.

N2  - Remembering and forgetting are the two major features of both individual and collective memory. In  every society, collective and cultural memory are formed in-between these two features. However, this process is generally controlled and manipulated by the power holders; remembering process is formed and shaped by positive and coercive means such as, rituals, remembering performances and sites of memories, as well as creating an offical history and criminal codes. In parallel, forgetting patterns are created and performed easily, especailly in modern societies; the destruction of old social and cultural environment, mass consumption habits, the speed of modern life, help and facilitate collective forgetting. The reconstruction of the cities with highways, massive, similar buildings, huge consumption centers (like AVMs in Turkey) destroy the memories forever.
