TY - JOUR T1 - EFFECTS OF SILICON CARBIDE, MILLSCALE, AND MAGNESIA PARTICULATES ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF HYBRID UNSATURATED POLYESTER RESIN MATRIX COMPOSITES AU - Durowaye, Stephen AU - Sekunowo, Olatunde AU - Shittu, Shola AU - Duru, Precious PY - 2018 DA - June Y2 - 2018 JF - Usak University Journal of Engineering Sciences JO - UUJES PB - Usak University WT - DergiPark SN - 2651-3447 SP - 28 EP - 37 VL - 1 IS - 1 LA - en AB - Theefficacy of reinforcement of polyester resin matrix composites with hardceramic particles for optimal performance was studied. 5-25 wt. % of siliconcarbide, millscale, and magnesia particles were applied in reinforcingunsaturated polyester resin matrix by mould casting and the microstructural andmechanical characteristics of the composites were evaluated. There was uniformdistribution of silicon carbide, millscale, and magnesia particles in thepolymer composites matrix from the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) result. Thehighest mechanical properties in terms of ultimate tensile strength (73.75MPa), flexural strength (74.89 MPa), hardness (98.76 BHN), and impact energy(24.85 J) was exhibited by the hybrid composite at 15 wt. % reinforcement. Thisshows the efficacy of hybridisation and the high potential of the composite forwider applications.
