Drug treatment is inadequate at the situation wherepeople respond positively to treatment, and is far from the recovery process.Recent studies have shown evidence that vitamins and minerals in the diet playan important role in these depressive disorders that occur in humans. Theeffects on the central nervous system are the resultant Folate and B12vitamins. In our study, Folate and vitamin B12 levels of outpatients treatedwith Eskişehir Osmangazi University psychiatric department were examined. Forthis purpose, 343 patients with vitamin B12 levels and 250 patients with Folatelevels who were referred to a psychiatric service in 2016 were retrospectivelydetermined. All the data obtained were evaluated statistically by SPSS 21package program. As a result of the evaluation, the prevalence of folatedeficiency was found to be 15.6% and that of vitamin B12 deficiency was foundto be 15.45%. For our results consistent with the literature, it can be saidthat vitamin B12 and folate levels should be routinely monitored during thediagnosis and treatment of major depressive disorder. Especially, antidepressantuse restriction and relieving symptoms can be interpreted as positive resultswith vitamin supplements. CR - Acarkan T, Nazlıkul H. 2017.
