N2 - The Ararat region was constituting a significant part of Armenia. The region was pushing its wealth to the top by means of enabling and giving way to East-West and North caravan flows, by means of its commercials centers such as Artaşat (Artaxata) and Aruc and the exportation of a great deal of commercial products to especially Islamıc world and Byzantine. The commodities and clothes tinted with the red color obtained from the Kermes (Cochineal) were the most precious commercial products of this region. As the first capital of Armenia, Artashat found fame by cochineal breeding, while the people of the region proud of this claimed that no such skill can be found anywhere else and this is their genuine skill. Cochineals were a type of insects that was found in the foothills of the Mount Ağrı/Ararat in spring time. Cochineals, which were reported to be abundant, were collected by the people of the region for obtaining a red dye using various methods. As this dye did not fade and always stayed vivid, the wool fabrics, silk clothes, rugs, pillows, sheets and hats dyed with it gained an almost priceless value. These products, which found buyers in the Islamic world and the Byzantium in high prices, paved the way for richness and multi-dimensional developments in the area of Ararat and the entirety of Armenia.
