N2  - Legends are folk narratives which can be created, transferred and used orally by anyone without depending on narrator type, prose and short structurally, topically historical, includes supernatural and religious features; functionally explains certain denotations, objects, geographical elements, gives messages which includes moral lessons and advices, usually believed real and holy by their narrator and listener, and by this means, related to religion and belief directly. Legends about names of some places or historical figures exist. In some legends, characters can change while narration diagram and characteristics stay the same. Some narrations can be attributed to various historical figures, narrations can show a disarray in historical level and live anachronism and adaptation. The same legend can be narrated in different ways in a small region. In this study, we examined the legends about the name Gaziemir district of İzmir. In our examination, we used legend texts which we obtained from our compilation in 2013. First of all, we gave place to definition of legend. Then we mentioned anachronism and adaptation factors and inform about Gazi Umur Bey who was entreated in the legend. Then we gave place to and analyzed previously published texts of the legend that we complied. As conclusion, we gave place to fastenings about how legends about a place’s name diversify and formed, based on Gaziemir example
