TY - JOUR T1 - MASCULINITY IDEOLOGY AND THREAT TO MANHOOD AS PRECURSORS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN TURKEY AU - Türkoğlu, Beril AU - Cingöz-ulu, Banu PY - 2019 DA - May JF - Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Dergisi PB - Dokuz Eylul University WT - DergiPark SN - 2147-4958 SP - 183 EP - 207 VL - 6 IS - 1 LA - en AB - This study aims toexplore the effect of masculinity ideology (MI) and the threat to manhood (TM) on violence against women (VAW) in Turkey bytesting two mediational models. The data is collected from a community samplevia by using quantitative research methods. The first model tests the effect ofMI on attitudes towards VAW through TM. A second one, employing a group ofnon-single men, tests the effect of MI on the frequency of actual perpetration ofviolence through TM and attitudes towards VAW. Endorsement of MI predicts tolerantattitudes towards VAW through perceived TM. These tolerant attitudes towardsVAW, in turn, predict its actual perpetration. We discuss the implications ofthese results from a social psychologicalperspective regarding how the broader ideologies of patriarchy and masculinitytrickle down to individual level violence towards one’s partner.
