TY - JOUR T1 - Examining the Effect of Problem Classification and Number Structures on Proportional Reasoning AU - Pelen, Mustafa Serkan AU - Dinç Artut, Perihan PY - 2019 DA - March JF - International Journal of Educational Studies in Mathematics JO - IJESIM PB - Ercan MASAL WT - DergiPark SN - 2148-5984 SP - 34 EP - 43 VL - 6 IS - 1 LA - en AB - The mainpurpose of this study is to examine sixth grade students' problemclassification abilities on proportional reasoning problems and whether problemsolving strategies and success rates change with problem type and numberstructure of the problems. This study considered 165 randomly selected studentsof grade six studying in middle schools in a southern province of Turkey duringacademic year 2013-2014. A problem test including proportional (missing value, numerical comparison, and qualitative prediction and comparison problems) andnon-proportional word problems was designed as a data collecting tool for theresearch. Number structures that involve within integer, between integer, bothwithin and between integer and non-integer relations were also included in theproblem test. The subjects of the study were divided into two groups. Half ofthe students solved the problem test first and then did the classification task(SC-condition), while the other half solved the problems in the reverse order(CS-condition). Strategies used in solving problems with different types andnumber structures were identified by evaluating students’ answers on problems.Besides, comparisons among different categories Descriptive data analysismethods were used for this purpose. Analysisshow that the problem classification skills of sixth grade students are inaverage level, and problem type, and number structure of the problems affectthe problem solving success.
