TY - JOUR T1 - The Role of Vocabulary vs. Syntactic Knowledge in L2 Reading Comprehension AU - Susoy, Zafer AU - Tanyer, Seray PY - 2019 DA - March DO - 10.32601/ejal.543787 JF - Eurasian Journal of Applied Linguistics JO - EJAL PB - Ece ZEHİR TOPKAYA WT - DergiPark SN - 2149-1135 SP - 113 EP - 130 VL - 5 IS - 1 LA - en AB - Research in literature reports the importance ofL2 vocabulary and syntactic knowledge on the learners’ reading comprehension. In this regard, the current study investigated the role of vocabulary knowledgethat is disunited into depth and breadth dimensions and syntactic knowledge inthe reading comprehension scores of an advanced cohort of English as a ForeignLanguage (EFL) learners. In particular, this study examined the relationship ofvocabulary knowledge (with its two dimensions) and syntactic knowledge withreading comprehension scores of 30 Turkish EFL learners and the extent to whichthese knowledge types explain the variance in reading comprehension scores.Measures of vocabulary breadth, vocabulary depth, syntactic knowledge andreading comprehension were used. The data analysis procedure included thedescriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlations and multipleregression analysis. The results showed that the depth of vocabulary knowledgepredicts the L2 reading comprehension the best when the effect of vocabularysize and syntactic knowledge is controlled. These findings are discussed at theend of the study with future research suggestions and limitations.  KW - Vocabulary knowledge KW - syntactic knowledge KW - vocabulary breadth KW - vocabulary depth KW - EFL reading comprehension CR - Barnett, M.
