TY - JOUR TT - Lexical-Semantic and Phonological Processing Deficits in Wernicke’s Aphasia AU - Aydın, Burcu PY - 2019 DA - December DO - 10.18492/dad.560784 JF - Dilbilim Araştırmaları Dergisi JO - JLR PB - Dilbilim Derneği WT - DergiPark SN - 1300-8552 SP - 221 EP - 239 VL - 30 IS - 2 LA - en KW - Wernicke's aphasia KW - lexical-semantic processing KW - phonological processing N2 - This studyinvestigates the lexical-semantic and phonological processing deficits inWernicke’s aphasia by comparing with healthy controls aiming to shed light onthe causes of impairment. Identifying and Picture-Naming, Lexical-SemanticAssociation and Rhyme Recognition Tests were used to assess the processing. Theresults showed that Wernicke’s aphasics have the inability to retrieve a nameassociated with a picture but they were able to match the semantic prime withthe associated target image similar to the control group. The results revealedthat Wernicke’s aphasics are capable of dealing with lexical-semanticprocessing and semantic judgment. Rhyme Recognition Test results revealed thatWernicke aphasics have partially preserved comprehension of printed language. The results of this study also showed that Wernicke’s aphasics performedsignificantly lower accuracy than controls on the phonological test andperformed comparably on the semantic test. It is concluded that their deficitsare likely to be related to access to the phonological representations ofwords. CR - Anthony, J. L., & Lonigan, C. J. (2004).
