TY - JOUR T1 - Nudging Time-Scale Sensitivity of a Simplified Black Sea CIL Forcing with a Three-Dimensional Idealized Bosphorus Hydrodynamic Model TT - Üç boyutlu idealize bir İstanbul Boğazı hidrodinamik Modelinde Karadeniz Soğuk Ara Tabakası Zorlamasının Zaman Ölçeği Hassasiyeti AU - Sözer, Adil AU - Özsoy, Emin PY - 2019 DA - August Y2 - 2019 DO - 10.35229/jaes.572713 JF - Journal of Anatolian Environmental and Animal Sciences JO - JAES PB - Bülent VEREP WT - DergiPark SN - 2548-0006 SP - 230 EP - 242 VL - 4 IS - 2 LA - en AB - Hydrodynamics of the Bosphorus Strait is examined under idealizedconditions with a three-dimensional numerical model. In particular, penetrationof a simplified Cold Intermediate Layer (CIL) of the Black Sea into the Straitspecifıed at the boundary is simulated with the aim of testing the sensitivityof the idealized model with respect to nudging strength. Successful penetration of a CIL-likestratification can only be achieved by inflowing nudging time-scales less thanor equal to one day, while the outflowing nudging strength is found to beinsignificant. However, numerical instabilities at the boundary are observedfor strong nudging cases with tnudg ≤ 0.01 day suggestingthat a careful selection of the nudging time-scale is important to achievesuccessful simulations of the CIL even in this highly idealized setup of theBosphorus strait. The presence of CIL altering the temperature distributionwithin the northern section of the idealized channel has a significant impacton the exchange through the strait. CIL reduces the density difference acrossthe strait resulting in decreased layer fluxes and velocities, while atwo-layer sense hydraulic control still holds at the sill. KW - Bosphorus KW - Cold Intermediate Layer KW - Idealized 3d model N2 - İstanbulBoğazı’nın hidrodinamiği üç boyutlu bir sayısal model marifetiyle idealizekoşullar altında incelenmiş, Karadeniz’in soğuk ara tabakasının (SAT) basitleştirilmişbir halinin idealize modelin kuzey sınırından penetrasyonu simule edilerek modelinaçık sınır koşullarıyla gerçekleştirilen sıcaklık profili zorlamasının zamanölçeğine (tnudg) hassasiyetiaraştırılmıştır.
