AB  - ÖZ19.yüzyılda Batılı araştırmacıların odağına yerleşen Osmanlı edebi- yatı, müstakilçalışmalara konu edilmiş ve bu alanda çeşitli yayınlar yapılmıştır. Şiirseçkisi, müstakil makale ve edebiyat tarihi yazımı bağlamında çeşitlenen buçalışmalar, Osmanlı dili ve edebiyatının tarih- selliğine ilişkin önemlidikkatler ortaya koymuşlardır. Osmanlı kültürü yazını, yalnızca bilimselçalışmalarla sınırlı kalmamış, süreli yayınlar aracılığıyla da her türdenokurun dikkatine sunulmuştur. 19. yüzyılda İngiltere, İskoçya ve İrlanda’dayayımlanan birtakım yerel gazeteler, Osmanlı kültürü ile ilgili haberlere sütunlarınıaçmış ve böylelikle be lirlibir elit ve akademik çevrede üretilen çalışmaları gündelik okurun dikkatinesunmuşlardır. Siyasi içerikli metinlere ve şiirlere, seyahat notlarına, Osmanlışiirinden çevirilere ve çeşitli eser tanıtımlarına yer veren bu gazeteler, 19.yüzyılda Avrupa’da bazı çevrelerde Osmanlı kültürüne karşı uyanan sempati vemerakın önemli temsilcileri olmuş- tur. Söz konusu gazeteler, İngiliz, İskoç veİrlanda basınında Osmanlı edebiyatının tartışıldığı bir kültür platformununyaratılmasını sağlamış ve bu alanda yapılmış ve yapılmakta olan çalışmalarınyaygın etkisine önemli katkılar sağlamışlardır. Bu makalede, İngiliz Gazete Arşivinde(The British Newspaper Archive) kayıtlı olan yerel gazetelerde 1835 ve 1900yılları arasında yayımlanmış Osmanlı edebiyatı ile ilgili haberlere/şiir çevirilerineodaklanılmış ve şu sorulara cevaplar bulunmaya çalışılmıştır: İngiliz, İskoç veİrlanda gazetelerinde Osmanlı edebiyatı ile ilgili yayımlanmış haberler ve bu edebiyattanyapılmış çeviriler nasıl bir içeriğe sahiptir? 19. yüzyılda Batı’da üretilmiş Osmanlıedebiyatı çalışmalarının ortaya çıktığı tarihsel bağlam içerisinde buhaberlerin nasıl bir işlevi vardır? Söz konusu haberler Osmanlıların/TürklerinBatı’daki algısı hakkında bugün bize neler söylemektedir? J. C. Mangan, Josephvon Hammer-Purgstall, J. W. Redhouse, W. A. Clouston ve E. J. W. Gibb gibiönemli oryantalistlerin çalışmalarını/şiir çevirilerini içeren haberleriodağına alan bu makalede, yukarıdaki sorulara birtakım cevaplar sunulmuş ve 19.yüzyıl Osmanlı kültürü çalışmalarının üretildiği ve tüketildiği kültürel bağlamortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır.

N2  - ABSTRACTFollowing theTraces of Ottoman Poetry in The British Newspaper Archive (1835-1900)In the 19th century, Ottoman literature became thefocus of Western scholars and various studies were published in this topic.These works were in the form of anthologies, individual articles and the historyof literature. They paid considerable attention to the historicity of Ottomanlanguage and literature. During this period, studies on the Ottoman writtenculture were not limited to scholarly works. There were also periodicallypublished newspapers and journals that presented the Ottoman culture to a wideraudience. In the 19th century, a number of local newspapers published inEngland, Scotland and Ireland opened their columns to the news about Ottomanculture. Thus, they brought the works produced within a particular elite andacademic circle to the attention of the common reader. These newspaperspublished political texts and poems, travel notes, translations of Ottomanpoems and reviews of certain works. They became important agents of promotingsympathy and curiosity about Ottoman culture in the 19th century Europe. Thesenewspapers created a cultural platform in which the Ottoman literature wasdiscussed by British, Scottish and Irish press, and made importantcontributions not only by boosting the impactof the previous studies but also by inspiring the on-going research inthis field. This article focuses on the news about Ottoman literature andtranslations of Ottoman poetry, which were published in the local newspapersbetween 1835 and 1900 and are now open to access in the British Newspaper Archive. The article aims to find answers to thefollowing questions: What is the content of the news about Ottoman culture andthe translations from Ottoman literature in the British, Scottish and Irishnewspapers? What kind of a function does these news have in the historicalcontext in which the Ottoman literature studies developed in the 19th centuryEurope? What do these news tell us about the perception of the Ottomans/Turksin the West? This article aims to provide some answers to the above questionsand reveals the cultural context in which the Ottoman studies were produced andconsumed in the 19th century by focusing on the news about the studies andtranslations of prominent scholars/orientalists such as J.C. Mangan, Joseph vonHammer-Purgstall, J. W. Redhouse, W. A. Clouston and E. J. W. Gibb.
