TY - JOUR T1 - In vitro Antibacterial, Antifungal and Anti-Mycobacterium Activity of Selected Lamiaceae and Asteraceae Species AU - Özçelik, Berrin AU - Belhattab, Rachid AU - Orhan, İlkay Erdoğan PY - 2019 DA - December JF - Journal of Gazi University Health Sciences Institute JO - GUHES PB - Gazi University WT - DergiPark SN - 2687-6353 SP - 21 EP - 27 VL - 1 IS - 1 LA - en AB - In this study, six extracts obtained fromvarious plants of Lamiaceae andAsteraceae families were screened invitro against Gram negative andGram positive bacteria, as well as Mycobacteriumtuberculosis and two yeasts.Acetone extracts of Origanum glandulosum, Marrubium vulgare andArtemisia herba alba as well as ethanol extracts of Artemisia herbaalba, A. absinthium and A. fragrance were used. Activity ofthe extracts were screened against Escherichiacoli, Salmonella enteritidis; Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis;Candida albicans, Candida krusei andMycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rvusing micro-dilution method according to the Clinical and LaboratoryStandards Institute. All the extracts showed antimicrobial activityagainst Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria at concentrations rangingbetween 64-256 µg/mL. Anti-Candida activities of the extract developed the sameMIC values towards all the extracts tested (MIC: 128 µg/mL) whereas A. herbaalba ethanol extract was more effective against C. krusei at thesame potency as the standard fluconazole (MIC: 64 µg/mL). Anti-mycobacteriumactivity was at the same MIC values of 128 µg/mL for all the extracts tested. Tested total extracts showed antimicrobial activity with higher MICvalues than standard antimicrobial agents. Fractions of extracts or isolatedmetabolites could prove to be more potent against pathogenic microorganisms.
