AB  - Oregano, a collective name of a group of taxa thathas been used as spice. Different genera and species of the family Lamiaceae thatcontain thymol and carvacrol are being used as oregano. In Turkey, there are 9taxa that belong to 3 genera which are being exported as oregano. In the outerand inner morphological characteristics of the taxa Satureja thymbra L., Satureja cuneifolia Ten.,Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav. and Thymbra spicata L. subsp. spicatawhich are exported as oregano havebeen reported. Distribution maps of the four taxa have been presented based onthe examined specimens kept in the 15 herbaria. The specimens are listed in theappendix and local usage and vernacular names are shown as tables.
