AB  - Exploitation of modernInformation and Communications Technology can raise awareness and efficientlysupport citizen initiatives and actions at a local level for facing emergencysituations before they spread.Motivated by the recentdestructive wildfires in Attica, Greece, wesuggest Volunteer Network for Critical Situations (VNCS), an onlinecollaborative system for immediate channeling and efficient diffusion ofinformation about emergency situations based exclusively on the contribution ofpeople / citizens located within a small range around the area where anincident occurs.Our objective is two-fold.On the one hand, we wish to demonstrate how advances in technology andcommunications can be exploited in order to strengthen social solidarity andsocial welfare. On the other hand, we wish to provide a practical solution, anonline social service, for supporting citizens to turn awareness into actionduring critical situations prior to the intervention of special governmentagencies and mechanisms.
