TY - JOUR T1 - Critical Reflection in Teaching and Learning Mathematics towards Perspective Transformation: Practices in Public and Private Schools AU - Calızon, Arturo Tobias PY - 2019 DA - September JF - The Eurasia Proceedings of Educational and Social Sciences JO - EPESS PB - ISRES Publishing WT - DergiPark SN - 2587-1730 SP - 60 EP - 66 VL - 14 LA - en AB - Thestudy investigated the practices in critical reflection being employed inteaching and learning mathematics in public and private schools for students toachieve perspective transformation in psychological, convictional andbehavioral dimensions. There were 1,969 senior high school and collegestudent-respondents selected at random from 33 schools. Process reflection wasmost commonly practiced in both public and private schools. Convictionaldimension of perspective transformation was most frequently achieved. There wasno significant difference in practices of process reflection between seniorhigh school and college students. However, there was significant difference inperspective transformation in behavioral dimension achieved by students frompublic and private schools. Also, there were significant differences inpsychological, convictional and behavioral dimensions of perspectivetransformation achieved by senior high school and college students. There washigh and significant relationship between critical reflection practices andperspective transformation of students. The researcher concluded that there wereteaching strategies like discovery learning that facilitated criticalreflection, and that there were learning activities like technology-basedproblem solving that altered students’ perspective of mathematics as anabstract field. The researcher further concluded that consistent use ofappropriate teaching and learning activities could bring about perspectivetransformation in students with success.
