TY - JOUR T1 - Inter-American Relations in the Age of Trump: How the U.S. Is Losing Its Grip on Its Volatile “Backyard” AU - Beckmann, Nicolas Alexander PY - 2019 DA - October JF - PERCEPTIONS: Journal of International Affairs JO - PERCEPTIONS PB - T.C Dışişleri Bakanlığı WT - DergiPark SN - 1300-8641 SP - 83 EP - 104 VL - 24 IS - 1 LA - en AB - Since the early 19th century, the U.S. has exerted strong political and economicinfluence over Latin America. The painful experiences of the Cold War, whenthe U.S. supported military dictatorships across the region, and assisted anticommunistforces in Central America, left deep scars in Latin America’s collectivememory. This article claims that while the Obama administration undertook aseries of measures to re-establish some trust, Donald Trump’s aggressive rhetoricagainst immigrants from Latin America, his Cuba Policy, and his threat of usingmilitary force in Venezuela have reinforced a negative image of the U.S. It alsoargues that threats of budget cuts for foreign aid and a protectionist trade policy areundermining the U.S. capacity to exert influence on its southern neighbours. Thiswill most likely bring the region closer to China and other extra-regional powers, which have been increasing their profile there in recent years.
