In thisstudy, we prepared starch-coated magnetic nanoparticles (Starch@MNPs) by theco-precipitation method, and used to remove Cr(VI) ions from water. Severalbatch experiments were performed to determine optimum conditions in theadsorption studies for Starch@MNPs such as pH, contact time, temperature, chromium ion and adsorbent concentrations. The synthesized Starch@MNPs wereanalyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to illustrate the shape andsurface properties of the nanoparticles. In order to define characterization ofthe adsorbent, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and EnergyDispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX) techniques were also used. The experimentaldata were compared with isotherm and kinetic models in order to determine themost suitable for fitting. The results showed that Cr (VI) adsorption ofStarch@MNPs was more suitable for Temkin isotherm and Psedudo-second kineticmodel, respectively. The maximum adsorption efficiency (98%) of Cr (VI) in 10mg/L initial concentration was obtained at contact time of 60 min., pH 4.0 andadsorbent concentration of 2.0 g/L. The obtained data from the study showedthat Starch@MNPs have quite high separation efficiency for Cr(VI) ions and alsoshowed that this adsorbent can be used as a promising adsorbent in futureadsorption studies.
