The dams of the bu lls were imported from West Germany to Karacabey State Farm in 1969 and 1970 and they were seven to ten months of age at the start of the experiment. The experiment started on November 28, 1971 at the open feed-Iot establishments of Lalahan Livestock Research Institute and lasted for 24 weeks. Aration of 12 % protein was used in the feeding. The ingredients used in the ration were: wet beet pu!p, wheat straw, ground bar1cy, wheat bran, cotton seed cake, molasses, bone meal and sa!ts. Right after the arriva! of the bu lls from Karacabey to Lalahan the temperature dropped makedly down and during the feeding period the weather was colder than usual winter conditions in Central Anatolia. Due to cold weather six Brown, two Holstein and six Simmental bu lls got broncho-pneumonia and had to leave the fccd-Iot at the cource of experiment. This may indicate that Holsteins showed better adaptation to cold than Brown and Simmentals. The initial mean body weights of Brown, Holstein and Simmental bulls were 153, 130 and 131 kg; average daily gain 1031, 1016 and 906 g, respeetively, all differences being nonsignificant. The respective efficiencies of feed conversion were 2 i. 7, i8. i and 21.8 kg. Since more Holstein bu lls completed the feeding trial their feed-Iot performance may be regarded more advantageous than Brown and Simmental breed}, number={03}, publisher={Ankara University}
